Sproul Plaza Renewal

This project included the renewal of this historic plaza which serves as the heart of the Berkeley Campus. One of the most densely populated spaces on the campus, Sproul Plaza serves as a major pedestrian portal, where thousands congregate on their way to and from classes, for people watching, meeting friends or holding protests. Constructed in 1960 the plaza had fallen into severe disrepair. The renewal addressed upgrades of the paving material, replacing outdated elements, improving lighting as well as bringing the space into conformance with current codes. A major challenge of this project was to keep the plaza functioning while the repairs were completed.
