Prewett Park Community Centre was planned by Noll and Tam Architects as a public facility that is the heart of Antioch’s diverse community. Housing several functions such as a gym, a multipurpose community room, a day care centre and a small police facility, the centre is also the entrance building to this 100-acre park. Previously undeveloped except for a popular waterpark, the rolling grasslands can become the central park of this city over time, with the Community Center as the jewel at the heart of this parkland.
The design is a response to this unique feature of the site. The building nestles into the ‘saddle’ topography of the site, creating a future gateway into the Central Park of Antioch. A continuous terrace acts as a welcoming arc with the landscape being characterized by a dramatic use of colour that adds drama to the space. The landscape to the north of the building was envisioned as a series of rooms, each with different functions, including a space for community events served by a kitchen, an amphitheater for concerts and other performances, and an outdoor play area for children..
